Members Area Tutorial: Photo Manipulate a Beautiful, Bejeweled Ancient Princess

Today’s advanced tutorial will show you how to photo manipulate a beautiful ancient princess scene. In this tutorial we will be covering key topics including:

  • Creating Custom Patterns
  • Single Point Perspective
  • Texturing
  • Advanced fashion photo retouching
  • Discussion and use of how shadows can make the added elements look natural
  • Creating custom 3D textured text

Final Image

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Resources Used In This Tutorial

Step 1

Create a new canvas in Photoshop with the dimensions Width=2253px and Height=3918px.

Step 2

In this step we are going to import the model and use Refine Edge to cut the model with fine details from its BG.

1) Now import the image of the model on to the canvas and place it as shown.

2) Cut the model from its BG using the Pen Tool (P) and leave the hair area as rough as possible. Then again select a mask around the model and this time select the mask just about the edges of the hair as shown.

3) Open the Refine Edge option and the Radius=0.3px, Smooth=2, Contrast=7%, and set the Output to New Layer. Then by using the Refine Radius Tool paint the edges of the hair to get the fine cut of the hair with every fine detail still intact.

Step 3

In this step we are going to place a texture BG to the scene.

1) Import the image of the texture on to the canvas and place the layer under the model layer.

2) Now add a black vignette effect by the edges of the scene in a new layer placed on the top of the layers pallete.

Step 4

In this step we are going to color correct the model.

1) Create an Exposure Adjustment layer to the Model layer and set the Gamma Correction to 0.74.

2) Now by using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer set the Saturation level to -50.

3) Create a new layer and paint the shadows of the model and the on the wall as shown on left, using the Soft Round Brush.

Step 5

In this step we are going to create an arch of swords behind the model.

1) Import the image of the Sword on to the canvas and place it behind the model as shown.

2) Similarly place another sword adjacent to the previous sword bent by some angle.

3) Follow the previous steps and complete the Right side of the swords arch as shown.

4) Now merge all the sword layers into a single layer. Then duplicate the layer and place it on the opposite side by flipping it horizontally.

5) Create a new layer above the arch layer and paint dark shadow covering the junction of the swords as shown.

Step 6

In this step we are going to create another arch using a different sword.

1) Cut the image of the sword from the stock image and place it in-between the gaps of the swords arch we previously created.

2) Duplicate the sword layer multiple times to complete right side of the arch as shown.

3) Now duplicate the right arch layer and place it on the left side as shown.

Step 7

In this step we are going to create the third arch.

1) Cut the second sword from the stock image and place it in-between every visible gap between the two previously created arches as shown.

2) Now create an Exposure adjustment layer to the third swords arch and set the Gamma Correction level to 0.75.

3) Then set the RGB curves as shown using the Curves adjustment layer.

4) Now de-saturate the third arch layer by -30 using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

5) Now duplicate the arch layer and place it on the left side as shown to complete the arch.

Step 8

In this step we are going to add shadow on and below the sword arches.

1) Merge the entire arch layers into a single layer. Then create a new layer under the arch layer and fill black color in the shape of the arch and name it as ‘shadow’. Now move it slightly towards the left.

2) Now add a Gaussian Blur of 3.9px to the shadow layer.

3) Create a new layer above the arch layer and paint shadow on the left side of the arch as shown.

Step 9

In this step we are going to add some makeup on the model’s face.

1) Create a new layer above the model layer and paint Black Kajal around the eyes as shown and set the Opacity of the layer to 72%.

2) Paint pink on the lips as shown in a new layer and set the Opacity of the layer to 38%.

3) Using the color #cb432a paint under the eyes as shown.

Note: Use Pen Tablet for better result.

Step 10

In this step we are going to create a designer locket on the fore head of the model.

1) Cut the image of the locket and place it on the fore head of the model as shown.

2) Now cut the side hanging supports of the locket and place them as shown.

3) Create an Exposure adjustment layer to the hanging supports layer and set the Exposure to -0.28, Gamma Correction=0.80.

4) Now create shadow layers for both locket and hanging support and add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 1.8px to it.

5) Now create a new layer and paint shadow on the left side of the locket and support as shown.

Step 11

In this step we are going create a tattoo on the forehead of the model.

1) Using the Brush Tool (B) draw a rough sketch of the tattoo design as shown.

2) Now create a mask in the shape of the tattoo using the Pen Tool (P), then fill the selection with the color #523000. With the tattoo layer selected set the Blending mode of the layer to Overlay and Opacity to 65%.

3) Duplicate the tattoo layer and place it on the opposite side as shown.

Step 12

In this step we are going to create an Indian styled tiara for the model to make her look like a princess.

1) Now cut the upper half of the diamond shaped ornament and place it on the model’s head as shown.

2) Create a new layer above the tiara layer and paint the dark shadow on the left side of it as shown.

3) Follow the previous steps a couple more times to complete the tiara as shown.

Step 13

In this step we are going create two pearls on the wrists of the model.

1) Import the image of the pearl ornament and place it on the left arm of the model as shown.

2) Now create a shadow to the pearl ornament with a Gaussian Blur of Radius 1.2px.

3) Create a new layer above the pearl ornament and paint shadow on the left side of it as shown.

4) Similarly create another pearl ornament on the right hand of the model and erase the part covered by the hair.

Step 14

In this step we are going to create bangles on both hands and also be painting shadows to make the bangle look resting on the arm.

1) Import the image of the bangle and place it on the left hand of the model as shown.

2) Using the Exposure adjustment layer set the Gamma Correction of the bangle to 0.69.

3) Now de-saturate the bangle layer to -27 using Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

4) As we can see the light source in the scene is from right hence create a new layer above the bangle layer and paint the dark shadow on the left side of the bangle as shown.

5) Create another layer and paint shadow under the bangle layer as shown.

6) Similarly create another bangle on the right hand of the model.

Step 15

In this step we are going to create gold chains joining the pearl and the bangle.

1) Create a new layer and draw a rough sketch of how you want the chains to be hanging. Locating an appropriate Centre Of Gravity (COG) on the chain can make it look heavy natural.

2) Now import the image of the gold chain and bend it according to the previously drawn sketch using the Puppet Warp.

-While using Puppet Warp make sure to place more anchor point to get a clean and smooth curve.

3) Similarly create another gold chain as shown.

4) Create a shadow layer beneath the chain layers and add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 1.9px.

5) Follow the previous steps to create another pair of chains on the other hand.

6) Group all the chain layers into a single Folder and add an Exposure adjustment layer to it, then set the Exposure level to -0.05, Offset=-0.0209 and Gamma Correction to 0.75.

Step 16

In this step we will be creating four 3D looking boxes on the BG between the long swords. Also we will be using prospective to make them look precise.

1) Create four black boxes in-between the long swords as shown.

2) Here we are going to use one point prospective to draw the sides of the boxes. Create a vanishing point between the eyes and draw series of lines joining the corners of the boxes.

3) Now just draw horizontal lines as shown joining the prospective lines.

4) Import the image of the texture and cut it in the shape of the boxes.

5) Using the Burn Tool (O) darken the edges of the boxes as shown.

6) Now paint black on the sides of the boxes as shown to give the 3D look.

7) Create a shadow layer under the boxes layer and move it slightly towards the left as shown. Then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 18.2px.

Step 17

In this step we are going to create the 3D title font and add texture them.

1) Type the title in the centre of each box as shown.

2) Now cut the metal texture in the shape of the font.

3) Open the Blending Option of the layer and select Bevel & Emboss. Then set Size to 17px and select Cone from the Gloss Contours.

4) Create a shadow layer under the font layer and add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 4.4px.

Step 18

In this step we are going to create a custom pattern to texture the title font.

1) Create new canvas and create a series of circles as shown without any BG. Then go to Edit>Define Pattern and save the pattern.

2) Now select Texture under Bevel & Emboss and select the Pattern we just created from the Patterns list and Scale it to 47% and Depth to +71%.

Step 19

In this step we are going to place borders to the scene.

1) Import the image of the border image and place it on the bottom corners of the scene as shown.

2) Now add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 8.6px to the borders.

3) De-saturate the borders to -62 using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

Step 20

In this step we are going to color correct the whole scene to blend every element together.

1) Create a Curves adjustment layer on the top of the layers pallet and set the RGB curves as shown and set the Opacity of the layer to 61%.

2) Now by using the Exposure adjustment layer set the Gamma Correction to 0.93.
