Final Image

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Resources Used In This Tutorial

Step 1

In this step we are going to cut the image of the women for our scene without losing any details.

1) Import the image of the women with headphones into Photoshop and cut the head as shown using the Lasso Tool (L).

Step 2

To make the skin look smooth add a Smart Blur of Radius 3 with Threshold 16.1.

Step 3

In this step we are going to paint the shape of the skull of the women.

1) Create a mask in the skull shape of the women and fill in the selection with the color #ceac89.

2) Now by using the color #ebd8c5 paint the bright shade on the skull as shown to match with the lighting on the original skin of the model.

Step 4

Stamp Tool (S) could be used to erase the hair on the head and neck of the model’s body but it would be a very time consuming process. So here we are going to use the texturing process by replacing the skin of the original model with the skin of another model.

1) Using the Magic Wand Tool (W) create a mask around the Jaw line and neck as shown on the second model and separate the selection into a new layer. Then import the skin on to the working canvas and place it on the Jaw line of the original model as shown.

2) Now create an Adjustment layer of Curves to the skin layer and set the curves as shown to blend with the color of the original skin.

Step 5

Now by using the Stamp Tool (S) clone the skin of the original model on the head as shown to blend the digital painting and skin together.

Step 6

In this step we will be using the texturing process to replace the skin on the neck.

1) Using the Magic Wand Tool (W) select a mask around the neck of the second model and separate the selection into a new layer and import it on to the working canvas and place it on the neck of the model as shown.

2) Now by using the Curves Adjustment layer color correct the skin to match the color of the original skin.

3) Now by using the Exposure Adjustment layer set the Gamma Correction to 0.46 to enhance the shadows of the skin.

Step 7

To blend the digital painting of the skull with the neck, paint the color #ceac8a as show to cover the sharp edges of the painting.

Step 8

In this step we are going to create an Ear to our character.

1) Cut Ear from our second model and import it on to our working canvas and place it as shown. But while placing the image make sure the anatomy of the ear is correct. The top of the ear should be in line with the eye and lower end of the ear should be in line with the bottom of the nose.

2) Now set the Curves as shown to match with the original skin.

3) Using the Soft Round Brush paint the shadow to the Ear as shown to make it look more realistic.

Step 9

In this step we are going to paint the tribal tattoo on the face of the model.

1) Using the Brush Tool (B) paint a rough outline of the tattoo as shown in a new layer.

2) Then by using the Pen Tool (P) select the mask in the shape of the tattoo design and fill in the selection with the color #52473d.

3) Then set the Blending Mode of the tattoo layer to Overlay and reduce the Opacity to 63%.

Step 10

Now cut the behind part of the skull in an arch shape as shown leaving the shape of the tattoo design untouched.

Step 11

In this step we are going to remove the black necklace using Stamp Tool and Texturing process.

1) Now by using the Magic Wand Tool (W) cut the chest and neck skin from the second model and place it on the main model as shown.

2) Create an Adjustment layer of Curves to the skin layer and set the curves as shown to blend the skin perfectly with the body.

3) Now spend some time with the Stamp Tool (S) to erase the black necklace on the dress of the model.

Step 12

In this step we are going to digitally paint the shadows and the bright shades on the cloned parts of the body.

1) Using the color #1c2d2a paint the dark shadow on the women as shown. Then set the Blending Mode of the layer to Darken and reduce the Opacity to 94%.

2) Now paint the bright shade on the dress using the color #d8e9ec as shown. Then set the Blending Mode of the layer to Overlay and reduce the Opacity to 48%.

Step 13

In this step we are going to color correct the model using the Adjustment layers. Before moving on to the color correction, merge the entire layers together and name the layer as Android. Then duplicate the android layer and hide duplicated layer which we will be using later.

1) Now create Exposure Adjustment layer to the original android layer and set the Gamma Correction to 0.46 to enhance the shadows.

2) Create a Curves Adjustment layer and set the curves as shown and reduce the Opacity to 58%.

3) Now create an Adjustment layer of Hue/Saturation and set the Hue to 175 and Saturation to 25. Then set the Opacity of the Adjustment layer to 48%.

Step 14

Now by using the Burn Tool (O) enhance the shadows on the android as shown.

Step 15

Now unhide the duplicated android layer and add an Adjustment layer of Exposure and set the Gamma Correction to 0.77, then set the Opacity of the android layer to 28% to get the following skin tone.

Step 16

In this step we are going to add a Background (BG) to the scene.

1) Import the background image on to the working canvas and place it beneath all the layers.

2) With the background layer selected go to Filter>Blur>Radial Blur and add a Radial Blur of Amount 10.

3) Then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 22.3px to the BG.

4) Now add an Exposure Adjustment layer to the BG layer and set the Exposure to +0.37 and Gamma Correction to 1.00.

Step 17

In this step we are going to create the Frame to the organic brain of our android.
1) Paint a rough sketch of the frame design as shown.

2) Then import the image of the metal texture on to the working canvas and cut it in the shape of the frame design using the Pen Tool (P).

3) Now create a Curves Adjustment layer to the metal texture and set the curves as shown.

4) Using the Soft Round Brush (B) paint the dark shadows on the metal texture as shown to blend with the scene.

5) Now fill black color in the shape of the frame in a new layer and set the Blending Mode of the layer to Overlay and reduce the Opacity to 28%.

Step 18

In this step we are going to paint the screws to the frame.

1) Paint the screw holes with the color #bac8c3.

2) Now by using the Soft Round Brush paint the shadows to the screw holes as shown to give them a 3D depth.

3) Now by using the color #4c5250 paint the screw grip as shown.

4) Paint dark shadow to the frame as shown to add depth to it.

Step 19

To create a 3D depth to the head we need to paint the inner visible area of the head at the corners.

-Using the color #4b4831 paint the inner part of the head at the corners of the head as shown.

Step 20

In this step we are going to create the organic brain of our android.

1) Create a new layer beneath the frame layer and add a radial gradient with White and Sky Blue colors as shown.

2) Now by using the abstract glow brushes paint the glow as shown using white color.

3) Import the image of the water texture and place it on the brain as shown and set the Blending mode of the layer to Hard Light.

Step 21

In this step we are going to create a power cord behind the skull through which the android is powered.

1) Paint the cord in the shape as shown using the Pen Tool (P).

2) Now paint White shade as shown to the cord to represent the glare of the glass which is a part of the cord.

Step 22

In this step we are going to create the fluid stuff entering the brain through the cord.

1) Import the image of the bubbled liquid texture and place it on the cord as shown.

2) Now by using the Curves color correct the fluid to match the color of the fluid in the brain.

3) Import the image of the water surface into Photoshop and cut the water surface and place it as shown on the previously created bubbled fluid.

4) Using the Curves Adjustment layer color correct the fluid surface layer.

5) Now add an Exposure Adjustment layer to the Fluid Surface layer and set the Gamma Correction to 0.76.

Step 23

In this step we are going to create a fan embedded with light at the centre of the android’s chest.

1) Using the Mask Tool (M) select a mask in the shape of an oval to fit with the prospective. Then fill the selection with black color to represent a hole.

2) Now cut the image of the Turbine from the plane engine and place it on the hole we previously created and transform it into the shape of the hole using the Move Tool (V).

3) Now create another oval mask in the centre of the fan and fill the selection with White paint which represents the light.

4) Now by using the Stamp Tool (S) clone few blades of the fan as shown.

Step 24

In this step we are going to create a glow to the fan’s light.

1) Using the Soft Round Brush paint the light glow as shown using the white paint.

2) Now place a lens flare on the light and set the Blending Mode of the layer to Screen.

Step 25

In this step we are going to create collar to the neck of the android.

1) Import the image of the steel mechanical part into Photoshop and cut a part of the threaded part into a new layer using the Pen Tool (P).

2) Now place the previously cut image on the neck of the android as shown.

3) Now create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the collar layer and set the Saturation level to -100.

4) Then create a Curves adjustment layer to the collar and set the curves as shown.

5) Now by using Exposure set the Gamma Correction level to 1.12.

6) By using the Soft Round Brush paint the shadows to the collar as shown.

Step 26

To identify an android from one another they are marked by bar codes. Hence we are going to add bar codes to our android.

- Using the bar codes brush, paint the bar codes as shown on the back of the neck.

Step 27

In this step we are going to do some final color corrections to the scene.

1) Create a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer on the top of all layers and set the Hue level to 175 and Saturation level to 25. Then set the Opacity of the layer to 29%.

2) Now create a new layer and fill it completely with white color and set the Blending Mode of the layer to Soft Light and reduce the Opacity to 36%.

3) Create an Exposure Adjustment layer and set the Gamma Correction level to 0.81.

4) Again create another Exposure Adjustment layer and set the Gamma Correction level to 0.77.

Step 28

Using the step 24(2) add few lens flares in the scene as shown.
