Members Area Tutorial: Photo Manipulate a Complex Surrogate Scene

In this tutorial we are going to create a futuristic operation theater where surrogates are repaired. In this scene a surrogate is hung by few high power cords attached to it’s body and a doctor is seen close to the scene noting down some observations standing near the surgical tools and lab apparatus. A futuristic transparent monitor located by some distance from the scene displays some tech. signs.

With this tutorial we are going to cover the topics like Creating Realistic Glass using Blending Options, Creating Patterns using texture images, Texturing, Digital Painting and many more interesting techniques.

Step 1

In this step we are going to cut the image of the women for our scene without losing any details.

1) Import the image of the women into Photoshop and rotate it in the below shown fashion.

2) Now create a mask around the women using the Pen Tool (P). Let the mask around the hair be rough.

3) With the mask selected around the women open the Refine Edge option and set Edge Detection Radius=2.1px, smooth=7, Contrast=23%. Then by using the Refine Radius Tool paint along the edges of the hair and press OK to create a mask around the women.

4) Now by using the mask separate the selection into a new layer.

Step 2

In this scene the women is hung by some power cords, so we need to adjust lower body of the women to match the gravitational force of the scene.

1) Separate the lower body of the women into a new layer.

2) Now by using the Move Tool (V) tilt the lower body as shown.

3) Create a new layer below the women layer and fill in the gap with white color.

4) Using the Soft Round Brush erase the hard edges of the women to blend perfectly.

5) Now merge all the layers and import the women on to the working canvas of dimensions Widh=2560px and Height=1440px.

Step 3

In this step we are going create the walls of the operation theater.

1) Using the color # ccdee0 paint the walls as shown.

2) With the wall layer selected go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 4.8px.

3) Now create a new layer beneath the wall layer and fill the layer with white paint.

4) Create a new layer above the previously created layer and fill the layer with white paint and lower the Opacity to 87%. This layer acts as the white translucent glass of the operation theater.

Step 4

In this step we are going to create the power cords by which the women is hung. In this scene the women is depicted as a bio mechanical robot which is getting repaired in an operation theater.

1) Using the Pen Tool (P) create a mask in the shape of the cords as shown and fill in the selection with Black color.

2) Now import the image of the Ball Bearing and place it on the black discs we previously painted to represent the cord joint to the body.

3) Now by using the color #dffdfc paint the light shade on the right side of the cords as shown.

4) To create shadow to the discs again paint the black discs in the size of the bearings in a new layer and place them beneath the bearings layer and move them slightly towards left side as shown.

5) With the bearings shadow selected add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 1.6px.

Step 5

In this step we will be working on creating the details to the main cord.

1) Using the Mask Tool (M) create the design as shown and fill in the selection with the color # dfddde.

2) Now add shadows to the design to create a 3D depth to it.

Step 6

In this step we are going to create a Photoshop Pattern using texture.

1) Import the image of the metal grid texture into Photoshop and cut out all the unwanted texture area using the Cut Tool (C).

2) Now go to Edit>Define Pattern and give the pattern a name and save it.

Step 7

In this step we will add previously created texture pattern to the selected parts of our cord design.

-Select the design where the texture is to be applied and open the Blending Options of the layer and go to Pattern Overlay and select the Metal Grid Texture pattern and set the Blending Mode to Multiply and Scale to 5%.

Step 8

In this step we will be creating the glow of the power at the cord joints.

1) Using the colors White and Blue paint the basic shape of the glow as shown.

2) Now import the image of the Lens Flare on to the working canvas and place it on the joint and set the Blending Mode of the layer to Screen.

3) Similarly add lens flares to the cords as shown.

Step 9

In this step we are going to place a doctor in the scene close to the camera which makes him look out focused as the lens is focused on the women.

1) Import the image of the Doctor on to the working canvas and place it on the right side of the scene as shown.

2) Now create a Curves Adjustment layer for the Doctor layer and set the curves as shown.

3) Now create Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer and set the Saturation level to -41.

4) To make the doctor look out focused add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 7.8px.

Step 10

To color correct the scene evenly create an Adjustment layer of Curves on the top of all layers and set the Curves as shown.

Step 11

In this step we are going to add a X-Ray view box in the scene.

1) Cut the image of the X-Ray view box from the stock image and place it on the left side of the scene we are creating.

2) Using the Soft Round Brush with the Black color selected paint the shadow to the X-Ray view box as shown.

3) As the X-Ray view box is mounted on the wall which is located by some distance from the women it must be out focused. Hence add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 3.1px.

Step 12

In this step we will be placing a helical lab tubes in the scene.

1) Cut the image of the helical tube and the tumbler from the stock image and place it on the left side of the scene as shown.

2) Now duplicate only the helical shaped tube into a new layer and move it upwards to extend the height.

Step 13

In this step we are going to paint the Chemical fluid in the tubes. While painting the fluid in the tubes make sure you don’ paint the tumbler to the top as the liquid raises to the tubes due to pressure difference.

1) Now by using Blue color paint the Fluid in the tubes and tumbler. Then set the Blending mode of the layer to Soft Light.

2) Merge all the tubes and fluid layers into a single layer. Then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 6.8px to the layer to maintain the Depth Of Field (DOF) of the scene.

Step 14

In this step we will be adding few surgical tools closer to the scene.

1) Create a mask around the surgical tools using the Pen Tool (P) and separate the selection into a new layer.

2) Now import the image of the surgical tools image on to the working canvas and place it as shown.

3) Now create a Brightness/Contrast Adjustment layer to the surgical tools layer and set the Brightness level to 23 and Contrast level to 9.

4) Create a Curves Adjustment layer to the surgical tools layer and set the curves as shown.

Note: You might have observed that we have been using Adjustment layers for every color correction process. This is because we will have a scope for re-editing the layer from beginning at any time, may it be after finishing the work but not satisfied by your work on a particular layer.

5) Now add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 3.4px to the surgical tools layer to match with the DOF of the scene.

Step 15

In this step we are going to add surgical lights to the scene.

1) Cut the image of the surgical lights from the stock image and place it on the working canvas as shown.

2) Now create Brightness/Contrast Adjustment layer to the lights layer and set the Brightness layer to 15.

3) Create a Curves Adjustment layer and set the curves as shown.

4) Now create Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer and set the Saturation level to -50.

5) Import the image of the lens flare on to the working canvas and place it on the surgical light and set the Blending Mode of the layer to Screen.

6) Similarly add lens flares to all the lights of the surgical light setup.

Step 16

In this step we are going to create a robotic hand with a pointed tool on the end which is used to repair the sophisticated parts of the bio mechanical robot.

1) Cut the image of the mechanical arm from the stock image and import it on to the working canvas, then place it as shown.

2) Now create an Adjustment layer of Curves to the Mechanical arm and set the RGB curves as shown.

3) Now cut the needle from the syringe image and place it on the end of the mechanical arm.

4) Similarly create another arm and place it opposite to the previously created arm.

5) Since the second arm is placed in front of the surgical light a part of the light glow covers the edges of the robotic arm. Hence add a slight glow on the edges of the second robotic arm.

Step 17

Import the image of the robotic arm on to the working canvas and place it as shown in the scene.

Step 18

In this step we are going to create a wall mounted table to the base of the white translucent glass.

1) Using the Mask Tool (M) create a thin mask near the base of the white glass and fill in the selection with #9cbacf color.

2) Now by using the Pen Tool create a mask for the table top maintaining the prospective and fill in the selection with White color.

3) Create a wall strip as shown using the same color of the wall.

4) Now by using the Soft Round Brush paint the shadow under the table as shown.

5) Now merge all the table layer and add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 2.7px.

Step 19

In this step we are going to add buildings in the back ground behind the white glass.

1) Cut the image of the building from the stock image and place it in between the two white glass layers we created in step 3.

2) Similarly add few more buildings in the background as shown.

3) Now merge all the building layers and add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 7.0px.

Step 20

In this step we are going to create a futuristic transparent screen display, just like the kind of monitors we find in IRON MAN movie.

1) Create a black strip on the top of the table as shown, which serves as the base for the monitor.

2) Now create glossy shade to the monitor base as shown.

3) Now create a new layer for screen and by using Mask Tool (M) create a mask in shape of the screen and fill in the selection with black color and reduce the Opacity to 21%. Then duplicate the screen layer.

4) Now open the Blending Options of the duplicated screen layer and select Drop Shadow option then select the color # 72c2c1 and set Blending mode to Linear Burn. The rest of the settings follows as mentioned: Opacity=50%, Angle=134, Distance=1px, Speed=13%, Size=3px.

5) Now select Inner Shadow and set Blending Mode to Linear Burn and select the color # 72c2c1 then set the Opacity to 26%, Angle=142, Distance=4px, Choke=7, Size=32.

6) Select the Inner Glow option and set Blending Mode to Linear Dodge (Add), then reduce the Opacity to 17%. Now select the color #b2fff9, Technique= Softer, Source= Edge, Choke= 7%, Size= 5px, Range=45%.

7) Now select Bevel and Emboss and set the values as described,
Style=Inner Bevel, Technique=Chisel Hard, Depth=259%, Direction=Up, Size=1, Soften=0, Angle=138, Altitude=37, Highlight Mode=Linear Dodge (Add) and select White color, Shadow Mode= Linear Dodge (Add) and select color #72c2c1. Set the Opacity of Highlight Mode to 46% and Shadow Mode Opacity to 49%.

8) Now select the Contour and select Shark Fin from Contour Picker and set the Range to 100%.

9) For glossy shade on the screen, select Gradient Overlay and choose Linear Dodge (Add) from the drop down list. Then set the Opacity= 23%, Select the white gradient as shown, Style= Linear, Angle=43, Scale=148%.

10) Now select Stroke option and set Size= 1px, Position= Inside, Opacity=98%, Fill Type= Color, and finally select the color #8aa8a2.

Step 21

In this step we are going to create the digital display on the screen we created in the previous step.

1) Cut the image of the X-Ray from the X-Ray view box and place it on the screen as shown.

2) Using the tech brushes paint some robot and hologram images on the screen as shown.

3) Now Merge all the Monitor layers, then create an Adjustment layer of Curves to the monitor layer and set the curves as shown.

4) Now create an Adjustment layer of Exposure to the monitor and set the Exposure= +0.51, Gamma Correction=1.00.

5) Now by using Brightness/Contrast increase the Brightness to 29.

6) Now add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 2.7px to the Monitor to match with the DOF of the scene.

Step 22

In this step we will be adding a Magnifier placed on the table.

1) Import the image of the Magnifier on to the working canvas and place it on the table as shown.

2) Now add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 2.7 to the Magnifier.

Step 23

In this step we are going to place few lab flasks filled with certain volume of chemicals in them.

1) Import the image of the flasks on to the working canvas and place it beside the magnifier as shown. Then by using Exposure increase the Exposure level to +1.08.

2) Now by using the Soft Round Brush paint shadows to the flasks.

3) To change the color of the chemicals, create a mask around the chemical portion using the Pen Tool (P), then by using Hue/Saturation set the Hue to 188 and Saturation to 24.

4) Now add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 2.7px.

Step 24

In this step we will be creating a glass sign board mounted on the wall.

1) Duplicate the glass layer that we created in step20 and transform it in rectangular shape as shown.

2) Using the Text Tool (T) type in LABORATORY and reduce the Opacity of the text layer to 47%.

3) Now by using the color #c2cbd8 paint the holder that holds the glass to the wall.

4) Now create a shadow layer beneath the holder layer and add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 0.8px to it.

5) Similarly create another holder on the other corner of the glass as shown.

6) Merge all the sign board layers together and add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 2.7px.

Step 25

1) Now add few lens flares on the bottom of the scene as shown.

2) Now add another lens flare in the middle of the scene as shown to represent the flare of the sunlight.

Step 26

In this step we are going to create the inner bio material skeleton exposed on the right hand of the women which is opened for a repair.

1) Using the Pen Tool (P) cut the portion of the hand as shown.

2) Now create a cylindrical shape and fill it with black color as shown which represents the inner skeleton.

3) Using the Stamp Tool (S) clone the gaps and fill them as shown.

4) Now by using the dark brown color paint the inner skin as shown to generate the 3D effect and to make the skin look as if it is wrapped around the bio mechanical skeleton.

Step 27

Now import the image of the metal texture and go to Edit>Define Pattern and give the pattern a name, say..arm texture.

Step 28

Open the Blending Options of the inner skeleton layer and select Pattern Overlay and select the arm texture from the Pattern drop down list and set Blend Mode to Darken Color then reduce the Scale to 4%.

Step 29

In this step we will be creating small LED lights glow on the inner skeleton.

1) Import the image of the Lens Flare and place it on the hand as shown and set the Blending Mode to Screen.

2) Similarly add series of lens flares as shown.

3) Now paint the glow as shown using white and blue colors then set the Blending Mode to Overlay and set the Opacity of the layer to 64%.
