Members Area Tutorial: Learn How to Photo Manipulate an Ancient Shrine

In this tutorial we are going to create a sacred resting place of an ancient mask, where light is focused from above the mask.

With this tutorial we are going to cover topics like.

- Texture and surface manipulation in Photoshop.
- Blending multiple images correctly and non-destructively
- Creating natural depth with custom shadows.
- Creating artificial Depth Of Field (DOF).
- Dramatic Color Correction using adjustment layers.

Final Outcome:

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Resources Used In This Tutorial

Step 1

Create a new canvas in Photoshop with dimensions Width=2560 and Height=1440. Then import the image of concrete texture on to the working area.

Step 2

In this step we are going to create a rock table in the scene.

1) Import the image of the rock table and place it in the scene as shown.

2) Create a new layer and paint the black bokeh along the sides of the scene as shown.

3) Now create a new layer and paint the dark shadows around the stone table as shown.

4) Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the stone table and set the Saturation level to -48.

5) Then by using the Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer set the brightness of the stone table to -40.

6) Pop up the dark shadows of the stone table by increasing the Gamma Correction Level to 0.75 using the Exposure adjustment layer.

Step 3

In this step we are going to work on adding few more textured details to the background.

1) Import the image of rock texture on to the canvas and erase the texture as shown using the Eraser Tool (E) leaving the details on the top of the scene.

2) By using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer reduce the Saturation level of the rock texture to -40.

Step 4

In this step we are going to place the mask in the scene and blend it with the lighting of the scene.

1) Import the image of the mask and place it on the rock table as shown.

2) Using the soft round brush paint the dark shadows on the mask as shown.

3) Create an Exposure adjustment layer to the mask and set the Gamma Correction level to 0.75.

4) Now reduce the Brightness of the mask to -13 using the Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.

Step 5

In this step we are going to place the Mayan’s Calendar behind the mask.

1) Import the image of the Mayan’s Calendar on to the canvas, and place it behind the mask as shown.

2) Now create a new layer above the Aztec calendar and paint the shadows as shown.

3) Create a Curves adjustment layer to the Aztec calendar and set the RGB curves as shown.

4) Now by using the Exposure adjustment layer set the Exposure level to -0.28.

5) Then de-saturate the calendar to -43 using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

6) Create a dark shadow layer beneath the Aztec layer and move it slightly towards the right, then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 6.4px.

Step 6

In this step we are going to add few more details and ancient Egyptian paintings on the BG.

1) Place another rock texture on the left side bottom corner of the scene as shown.

2) Then de-saturate the rock texture to -40.

3) Now place the Egyptian paintings on the either sides of the scene as shown.

4) Now set the Blending mode of the painting layers to Hard Light to blend with the BG texture.

5) Now reduce the Brightness of the paintings to -43 using the Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.

6) Now by using the Curves adjustment layer set the RGB curves as shown.

7) Then by using the Hue/Saturation set the Saturation level to -94.

Step 7

In this step we are going to add an Egyptian carving on the left side of the scene.

1) Import the image of the Egyptian carving on to the canvas and place it on the left side bottom of the scene as shown.

2) Using the Curves reduce the Red level as shown.

3) Then de-saturate the carving to -54 using Hue/Saturation.

4) Now paint the dark shadow on the carving as shown.

Step 8

In this step we are going to add a couple of molded clouds hanging in the scene.

1) Import the image of the molded cloud on to the canvas and place it as shown in the scene.

2) Now paint the dark shadow on the cloud as shown.

3) Then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 3.5px to the cloud to create some Depth Of Field (DOF) in the scene.

Step 9

In this step we are going to create ropes to the cloud, by the support of which the cloud is supposed to be hanging.

1) Import the image of the rope and place it behind the cloud as shown.

2) Then by using the curves adjustment layer set the RGB curves as shown.

3) Now increase the Gamma Correction level to 0.62 to boost the Blacks on the rope.

4) De-saturate the rope to -79 using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

5) Now paint the shadow on the right side of the rope as shown.

6) Then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 2.3px to both rope and the shadow.

7) Now duplicate the rope layer and place it on the right side of the cloud as shown.

Step 10

In this step we are going to place another cloud in the scene and color correct the clouds to blend with the scene.

1) Using the previous step create another cloud closer to the scene as shown.

2) Now group all the cloud layers into a single folder and add a Curves Adjustment layer to the folder. Then set the RGB curves as shown.

3) Then reduce the Saturation level to -32 using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

Step 11

In this step we are going to create a mutant silhouette.

1) Now by using the Hoplite font create mutant silhouette on the cloud 1 as shown.

2) Then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 2.8px to the silhouette to blend with the DOF of the scene.

3) Similarly create another silhouette on the cloud 2, as shown.

4) Create a new layer above the silhouette layers and paint the light shade on them as shown.

Step 12

In this step we are going to add an old pillar on the left side of the scene.

1) Import the image of the Old pillar on to the canvas and place it on the left side bottom corner of the scene as shown.

2) Now paint shadow on the pillar as shown.

Step 13

In this step we are going to create few dead branches in the scene.

1) Place the image of the dead tree on the left side of the scene as shown.

2) Now make the branches darker by increasing the Gamma Correction level to 0.66.

3) Then add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 7.4px to the branches to maintain the DOF of the scene.

4) Similarly add few more branches on the right side of the scene as shown.

Step 14

In this step we are going to color correct the entire scene together.

1) Create Curves adjustment layer and set the RGB curves as shown.

2) Then boost up the shadows by increasing the Gamma Correction level to 0.85 using Exposure adjustment layer.

And We’re Done!
