Scholar’s Study Room

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Resources Used In This Tutorial

Step 1

In this step we are going to setup the wall for the scene.

1) Create a new canvas in Photoshop with the dimensions Width=2560px and Height=1440px. Then import the image of the concrete wall texture and place it in the scene.

2) Now create a new layer above the texture layer and paint black bokeh borders as shown.

Step 2

In this step we are going to add the main character to the scene.

1) Import the image of the model on to the working canvas and place it on the right side of the scene as shown.

2) Using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer set the Saturation level of the scholar to -44.

3) To enhance the shadows on the model create an Exposure adjustment layer and set the Gamma Correction to 0.80.

Step 3

In this step we are going to create the study table from scratch.

1) Cut the side design of the table and import it on to the canvas, then place it as shown behind the scholar.

2) Now duplicate the layer and extend the size of the table.

3) Import the image of the table’s leg from the previously used stock image and place it as shown.

4) Duplicate the leg layer and resize it, then move it towards right as shown to make it look like the rear table leg.

5) Now create a new layer and paint the table top as shown to get a proper perspective of the table.

6) Create a new layer under the table layer and paint the dark shadow as shown.

7) Extend the vertical size of the rear table leg using the Pen Tool (P).

8 ) Group all the table layers in one folder, then create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and set the Saturation level to -60.

9) Using the Exposure adjustment layer set the Gamma Correction level to 0.62 to enhance the shadows of the table.

Step 4

In this step we are going to add wood texture on the table top.

1) Import the image of the wood texture and transform it to fit the perspective of the table top using the Move Tool (V).

2) Reduce the Brightness of the wood texture to -37 using Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.

3) Using Hue/Saturation adjustment layer de-saturate the texture to -44.

4) Now increase the Gamma Correction level to 0.76 using Exposure adjustment layer.

5) Create a new layer above the table layer and paint dark shadow on the right side of the table as shown.

Step 5

In this step we are going to create a window to the study room we are creating.

1) Cut the image of the window using the Mask Tool (M) and then select the Blue layer from the Channels Pallet. Then go to Image>Calculations and select Blue in the Channel drop down list.

2) With the Alpha layer selected go to Image>Adjustments>Levels and set the levels as shown to turn the window in to a silhouette.

3) As you can see there are still few unfinished edges in the silhouette, hence select the Brush Tool (B) and paint the unfinished edges black to make the image a perfect silhouette.

4) With the Window layer selected go to Select>Load Selection and select Alpha 1 from the Channel dropdown list. Using this mask separate the window frame from the unwanted BG into a new layer.

5) Now import the window onto the canvas and place it on the left side of the scene as shown.

6) Cut a brief slack of the sides of the window wall from the stock image and place it as shown around the window.

7) Create a new layer and paint grunge edges to the sides of the window to make it look old.

Step 6

In this step we are going to color correct the window.

1) Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the window layer and set the Saturation level to -63.

2) Now by using the Curves adjustment layer set the RGB curves as shown.

3) Reduce the Brightness of the window to -14 using the Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.

4) Create an Exposure adjustment layer and set the Gamma Correction level to 0.82.

Step 7

1) Erase the wall texture behind the window using the Eraser Tool (E).

2) Now create a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and set the brightness to -44.

Step 8

In this step we are going to create scenery seen through the window.

1) Place the image of the scenery behind the Wall texture as shown.

2) Using the Exposure adjustment layer set the Gamma Correction to 0.73.

3) Now reduce the brightness to -37 using Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.

Step 9

In this step we are going to place a clock in the scene.

1) Import the image of the clock and place it on the right side of the scene as shown behind the scholar.

2) Now reduce the Saturation by -56 using Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

3) Now enhance the shadows by increasing the Gamma Correction level to 0.60 in Exposure adjustment layer.

4) Reduce the brightness of the clock to -18 using Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.

5) Using the Curves set the Red curve as shown.

6) Using Soft Round Brush (B) paint the shadow on the clock as shown.

Step 10

In this step we are going to create some books placed on the table.

1) Import the image of the books on to the working canvas and place them on the left side of the table as shown.

2) Create a new layer and paint the shadow on the books as shown.

3) De-saturate the books by -43 using the Hue/Saturation.

4) Now reduce the Brightness of the books to -10.

5) Similarly create another pile of books on the table.

Step 11

In this step we are going to create frame on the wall and color correct it to blend with the environment of the scene.

1) Import the image of the frame and place it in the center of the wall as shown.

2) Now de-saturate the frame to -55 using Hue/Saturation.

3) Set the Gamma Correction level to 0.68 in Exposure adjustment layer.

4) Then reduce the Brightness to -68 using Brightness/Contrast.

Step 12

In this step we are going to paint some shadows to the frame.

1) Create a silhouette of the frame behind it and move it slightly towards the right as shown.

2) Now add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 3.5px to the silhouette layer to make it look like a perfect shadow.

3) Create a new layer above the frame layer and paint shadow on the right side of the frame as shown.

Step 13

In this step we will be creating an old vintage photo.

1) Import the image of the couple and place it in the frame as shown.

2) Now turn the image to Black & White using Black & White adjustment layer. Leave all the values in it as default.

3) Now reduce the brightness of the photo to -22.

4) Place the image of an old paper on the photo and set its Blending mode of the layer to Overlay.

5) Create a new layer above the photo layers and paint some grunge as shown on the photo.

Step 14

In this step we are going to create a phone on the table.

1) Import the image of the phone and place it on the left side of the table as shown.

2) Now create a new layer above the phone layer and paint the shadow on the right side of the phone as shown.

3) Create a silhouette layer behind the phone and move it towards the right and add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 6.3px.

4) De-saturate the phone layer to -44 using Hue/Saturation.

5) Slightly reduce the Brightness of the phone to -10.

Step 15

In this step we will be placing a globe closer to the scene.

1) Import the image of the globe and place it on the left side bottom corner as shown.

2) Since we said the globe is placed closer to the scene, add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 6.3px to it.

3) Now by using Hue/Saturation set the Saturation level to -29.

4) Then reduce the brightness to -38 using Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.

Step 16

In this step we will be creating an oil lamp placed on the table.
