Members Area Tutorial: Create a Dark, Professional Landing Page

Resources Used In This Tutorial

Final Image

Here is a preview of the image that we are going to be creating:

Setting Out Your Guides:

Start off your design by setting out the guides.

Vertical Guides:

100px, 400px, 600px, 700px, 1000px

Horizontal Guides:

50px, 170px, 550px, 850px

Step 1

Create a new document (1100X900px).

Create a new layer called ‘background color’. Fill your canvas with 181818.

Step 2

Now create a new layer called ‘lens flare’.

Fill your canvas with black, and then go to filter>render>lens flare. Apply a 105mm Prime lens flare at 100% brightness.

Then change this layer’s blend mode to ‘screen’ in order to hide the black background and only let the lens flare show over your original background. Reduce this layer’s opacity to 30%.

Step 3

Now download the fractal brush set from the resources for this tutorial.

Apply one of the set roughly in the center of your canvas. Use a white brush at around 400-500px size.

Then apply a layer mask and use a large, soft black paintbrush in order to mask off the edges of your brush, so that they blend smoothly into your background.

Finally, to make the effect more subtle, reduce the opacity of your brush layer to 8%.

Step 4

Now repeat the last step, applying several more fractal brushes to build up your background. Be sure to reduce the opacity of each brush layer, as well as masking off the edges of your brush marks.

In order to make your brush marks clearer, go to filter>sharpen>sharpen.

Step 5

Paste in one of your wing sets from the premium vector wing set in the resources for this tutorial.

Reduce the opacity of your wing layer to 10%.

Step 6

Now create a new document (15X10px).

Fill your canvas with black, and use your marquee/paintbucket tool to create a ‘ring of a chain’ type shape. Then go to edit>define pattern. Save your pattern as ‘chain’.

Return to your original document and create a new layer called ‘chain pattern’.

Fill this layer with black, and then apply a pattern overlay, selecting your ‘chain’ pattern that you’ve just saved.

Change this layer’s blend mode to ‘screen’. This will hide the black areas of your layer, and will allow the chain pattern to let the underlying background show through. Finally, reduce this layer’s opacity to 4% to make the effect more subtle.

Step 7

Now you want to have your pattern as an image, rather than simply a pattern overlay blending option. To achieve this, create a layer beneath your pattern layer called ‘chain’. Then merge down your pattern layer with this new layer (command+E).

This will let you manipulate this image layer easily.

Start by going to edit>transform>rotate and rotate your pattern image by about 30%.

Then go to edit>transform>warp. Warp your chain pattern to try and make it more 3D. Then use a layer mask to mask off the edges of your chain pattern.

Step 8

Download the font ‘Headline 2′ from the resources section for this tutorial.

Type out a menu in the top right of your canvas.

Font Settings:

Font Face: Headline 2
Font Size: 18pt
Kerning: 0
Color: ffffff

Then create a layer beneath your menu text layer called ‘highlight’. Drag out a radial gradient ranging from 0ed1ee to transparent behind your ‘home’ link. Then reduce this layer’s opacity to 25%. This should create a nice lighting effect beneath your active menu link.

Step 9

Create a new layer above your menu layers called ‘hover’.

Use a 2px white paintbrush tool to create a large messy, hand-drawn circle.

Then use your transform options to scale the circle down to fit around your ‘home’ menu link. By scaling it, the circle will transform from messy to a lovely hand-drawn, grungy effect.

Step 10

Now create a layer called ‘logo area’. Create a circular selection and fill it with ffd800.

Then use your pen tool to cut out a kind of ‘swoosh’ shape from your circle.

Then apply an inner shadow, bevel and emboss and gradient overlay blending option to this layer:

Inner Shadow Settings:

Blend Mode: Overlay
Color: ffffff
Opacity: 50%
Distance: 8px
Size: 9px

Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Inner Bevel
Depth: 100%
Direction: Up
Size: 13px
Soften: 0px
Angle: 90 degrees
Highlight Opacity: 0%
Shadow Opacity: 10%

Gradient Overlay:

Blend Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Gradient: Ranging from ffc000 to ffcc00
Angle: 90 degrees

Step 11

Now duplicate your ‘logo area’ layer. Move your duplicate layer beneath your original.

Then go to edit>transform>rotate. Rotate your duplicate shape until you have something like the image below. Also scrap your blending options, apart from your gradient overlay. Change your gradient colors to range from ff6600 to ffd800.

Step 12

Now apply some logo text next to your logo icon.

Logo Font Settings:

Font Face: Bebas
Font Size: 36pt
Kerning: -25
Color: ffd800 and ffae00

Step 13

Now apply some headline text beneath your logo area.

Headline Font Settings (White Text):

Font Face: Bebas
Font Size: 80pt
Kerning: -25
Color: ffffff

Headline Font Settings (Yellow Text):

Font Face: England Hand DB
Font Size: 100pt
Kerning: -25
Color: f5f3a4

Step 14

Now apply some text to the right of the headline text.

Font Settings:

Font Face: Mido
Font Size: 24pt
Kerning: -50
Color: ffffff

Step 15

Now create a rounded rectangle button shape beneath this text.

Apply a drop shadow, inner shadow, gradient overlay and stroke blending option. Then apply some ‘JOIN US TODAY!’ text over the button, using the same font as the text in the previous step.

Drop Shadow Settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply
Color: 000000
Opacity: 20%
Angle: 90 degrees
Distance: 5px
Spread: 0%
Size: 5px

Inner Shadow Settings:

Blend Mode: Normal
Color: ffffff
Angle: 90 degrees
Distance: 1px
Choke: 0%
Size: 0px

Gradient Overlay Settings:

Blend Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Gradient: ffae00 to ffd800
Angle: 90 degrees

Stroke Settings:

Size: 1px
Opacity: 100%
Color: 39302a

Step 16

Create a new layer called ‘dividers’. Now use your line tool to create a series of 1px white lines following your layout guides. Reduce the opacity of these divider layers to 10-20%. This should create some subtle structure for your design:

Step 17

Now add some text to your bottom area, between your newly created dividers:

Step 18

Finally, use your marquee selection tool to select the bottom 50px of your canvas. Create a new layer called ‘footer’ and fill this selection with 0b0b0b.

Then apply an inner shadow blending option, and some copyright text:

Inner Shadow Settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply
Color: 000000
Opacity: 90%
Angle: 90 degrees
Distance: 5px
Choke: 0%
Size: 5px
